How much does social media management cost, and what should be included?

The number of posts does not determine the full cost of social media management. Learn what you are paying for, what should be included and how to compare proposals.

Ask three providers how much social media management costs and you may receive three offers that are impossible to compare. One promises twelve posts, another sells a strategy, and a third includes filming and advertising. Every proposal has a monthly price, but they are not offering the same work.

The useful question is what the business needs somebody to own. Who develops the ideas, gathers accurate information, creates the photographs and videos, replies to comments and measures whether interest becomes a relevant enquiry? A low fee can become expensive when essential work is excluded. A larger package can also waste money when it contains channels and production you cannot use.

This guide breaks the service into comparable parts. It does not invent a universal market rate, because a single figure would hide substantial differences in scope, geography and production. Use it to understand what belongs in a proposal, what remains your responsibility and which measurements connect activity to business value.

What does professional social media management include?

Managing a profile involves more than placing a photograph beside a caption. Useful work starts with the offer, the customer and the business objective. A restaurant may need reservations, a professional practice may need appropriate service enquiries, and an online store may need attributable sales. Those goals require different content and conversion paths.

The plan then decides which subjects to address and why. Some content explains a service, some reduces doubt, and some presents a timely offer. A profile filled only with discounts can look like a permanent clearance catalogue. A profile containing only general advice may earn attention without giving the customer a reason to choose the business.

Management also includes coordination. Someone must collect information, plan deadlines, obtain approval and check that prices, links and opening hours are accurate. This less visible work often separates a consistent programme from a profile that falls silent after several enthusiastic weeks.

What changes the monthly social media cost?

The first factor is the number of channels. Instagram and Facebook can share some assets, but publishing on both is not always a simple duplication. Formats, caption styles, audiences and platform functions differ. Adding TikTok or LinkedIn requires another layer of editorial and format decisions.

Production is the second major factor. A business supplying organised, high-quality photographs creates one type of assignment. A team that must plan a shoot, write a script, arrange lighting, film, edit and caption the footage performs substantially more work. One strong short-form video can take longer than several static posts.

Operational responsibility matters too. Does the package include Stories, comment moderation, direct messages, influencer coordination, advertising or only scheduled feed content? Is there a report and a recommendation for the following month? A monthly price becomes meaningful only after these responsibilities are visible.

What should a good proposal state clearly?

The proposal should name the channels, original content pieces and formats included. “Twelve posts” does not explain whether you receive twelve ideas or four ideas adapted to three placements. It also does not reveal who films the video, supplies products or writes the expert information behind the captions.

The process should be explicit. When is the calendar submitted? How many revision rounds are included? Who verifies an offer before publication? Who obtains permission from people appearing in the content? Clear answers reduce delays and prevent a routine approval from turning into several days of conflicting feedback.

Exclusions belong in the proposal as well. Paid media, professional models, travel, studio hire, extensive customer support or a full-day production may sit outside the retainer. Exclusions are not a weakness when they are transparent and the business can plan for them.

Content production and profile management are different services

Content production creates the asset: the idea, copy, design, photograph or video. Profile management organises publication, captions, basic interaction and analysis. Some providers combine the two, while others deliver only one. This is why two packages with the same post count can carry very different fees.

If an internal employee already captures useful material, outside support might focus on planning, editing and distribution. If nobody can provide footage, a package without production leaves the calendar dependent on assets that never arrive. Build the scope around the resources that already exist inside the company.

Copy also varies in complexity. A brief caption is different from interviewing a specialist, researching a subject and producing an accurate educational explanation. A regulated or technical business should retain an internal review step before publication, regardless of who drafts the content.

Are paid social campaigns included?

Organic content and paid distribution support each other, but they are separate disciplines. A profile communicates with existing followers and people who encounter its content. A campaign selects an objective, audience, budget and optimisation event. Pressing a boost button is not a substitute for a campaign plan.

Separate the management fee from the media budget paid to the platform. This shows how much funds expertise and how much purchases distribution. The advertising account should normally remain an asset of the business, with the partner receiving an appropriate level of access.

If you are deciding between platforms, read our comparison of Google Ads and Instagram advertising. Channel choice should follow customer intent, the buying process and the available creative material rather than the owner's personal preference.

Who answers comments, messages and potential customers?

Community management means monitoring and responding within an agreed scope. A question about opening hours is different from medical guidance, a precise quotation for a construction project or a formal complaint. An agency can prepare response rules and routine answers while specialist, commercial and sensitive decisions remain with the business.

Agree operating hours and response expectations. “Messages included” does not automatically mean evenings, weekends or multilingual coverage. If response speed is commercially critical, the workflow needs a named internal owner or funded coverage outside ordinary working hours.

The handover to sales also matters. When a message becomes a serious opportunity, who calls the person and where is the enquiry recorded? Marketing creates an opening. The sales process should continue it without forcing the customer to repeat the entire conversation.

How many monthly posts are enough?

No post count works for every business. Twelve weak posts do not outperform six useful ones simply because the calendar looks busier. Frequency depends on the amount of meaningful information, production capacity and audience behaviour. A sustainable rhythm is better than a burst followed by silence.

Ask for editorial balance instead of volume alone. A month might contain a service explanation, an answer to a recurring question, evidence from real work, a view of the team and a clear offer. Each item should serve a role in the customer's decision rather than fill an empty date.

Stories can communicate current activity, short-form video can demonstrate a process, and a static graphic may communicate a price or deadline most clearly. Choose the format for the message. Claims about one magical format or posting frequency should be treated cautiously.

How do you measure whether management is worthwhile?

Look beyond likes and follower counts. A local service business may care more about relevant messages, calls and booked appointments. A retailer needs sales and order value. A business with a longer buying process may track qualified enquiries and sales meetings.

Agree how sources will be recorded. Forms can capture campaign information, advertising links can carry consistent tags, and the team can maintain a simple enquiry log. No method captures every journey perfectly, but several signals create a better picture than profile views alone.

Our guide to the three numbers that show whether marketing works explains the difference between attention and commercial performance. A report should help determine what to change next, rather than merely prove that content was published.

Is a low-cost package enough, or do you need a broader team?

A simple package may be sufficient when the business already has a strategy, supplies strong material and approves work quickly. It becomes a poor fit when you expect filming, campaign strategy, sales copy and continuous messaging from a service that covers only several graphic posts.

A broader team makes sense when the assignment needs several disciplines and reliable coverage. Team size by itself is not proof of quality. Ask who leads the account, how knowledge is documented and who takes responsibility when the usual contact is away.

If you are comparing outsourcing with hiring, our agency versus employee guide covers total employment cost, tools, specialist gaps and absence coverage. Select the operating model that matches the actual workload rather than the longest service list.

How should you compare two agency proposals?

Create a table with consistent rows: strategy, original concepts, filming, editing, design, publishing, community management, paid media, reporting and account ownership. Mark what each proposal includes. Differences become much easier to understand when they are removed from promotional language.

Estimate your own required involvement. Some packages assume the client supplies photographs, offers and approvals every week. If nobody has time to do that, the service will not operate as designed. Agree the input process before blaming one another for an empty calendar.

Begin with a defined first period and a short list of priorities. Every channel does not need to launch simultaneously. Establishing one useful profile, a clear contact path and reliable measurement may be more valuable than spreading the budget across four under-supported platforms.

Which scope makes sense for your business?

If people do not know the business exists, content and distribution can improve visibility. If people enquire but do not buy, the constraint may be the offer, trust, response time or sales process. Social media should not be asked to hide a problem later in the customer journey.

For some businesses the profile is the primary storefront. For others it is supporting proof that customers check after finding the company through search or a referral. A useful strategy recognises that role and distributes investment across content, advertising, the Google Business Profile and the website.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much does social media management cost?

The cost depends on channels, content volume, filming, editing, community management and advertising responsibilities. Compare a defined scope rather than treating every monthly package as equivalent.

  • Is advertising spend included in the management fee?

Usually it is separate. The professional fee and the money paid directly to Meta or another platform should appear as distinct budget lines.

  • How many social media posts does a business need each month?

There is no universal number. A sustainable plan that addresses customer questions, offers and proof is more useful than a high volume of weak posts.

  • Does social media management include replying to messages?

Only when the agreement says so. Community management, sales responses and customer support have different responsibilities and coverage expectations.
